Usually, when you turn the heat on, you’re expecting to feel warm air. However, what if you feel cold air? Most people’s first thought is “Great, my furnace is broken!” In some cases, this isn’t always true. Here are a few things you can check before calling an HVAC company.
Thermostat– As simple as it may seem, the first thing you should check is your thermostat. Be sure the system is set to “auto”. The reasoning behind this is if the thermostat is set to “on” then the heating system will blow constantly without heat and instead cool air.
Air Filter– Commonly, air filters need to be changed once a month to keep them from getting extremely dirty and clogged. If the filters are really dirty or clogged, it restricts the airflow to the furnace. When this happens, your furnace could overheat and as a safety precaution, stop your equipment from heating.
Duct Work– If there are leaks in the duct work, the warm air from the furnace will flow out. When this happens, the heating system gives off cool air and increases your electric bill.
